It was recently touted that the next series of Celebrity Big Brother could well be the last.

But that hasn’t stopped Channel 5 from pulling out all the stops for the next series of the show, which will air this summer, and is aiming for one of Netflix’s Queer Eye stars.

Grooming expert and breakout star, Jonathan Van Ness, from the streaming services revival of the hit noughties show is at the top of CBB’s most-wanted list, according to The Sun Online.

Courtney Act’s Celebrity Big Brother win is amazing but Ann Widdecombe coming second proves we’ve got a long way to go

Yes Ann, you carry on sticking your fingers in your ears (Picture: FIVE)

Courtney Act and Ann Widdecombe were arguably the two most entertaining housemates on this year’s series of Celebrity Big Brother but that’s where the similarities end. Courtney, the drag queen persona of Shane Jenek, and former Conservative MP Ann have wildly opposing views and have said so themselves.

Ann is anti-abortion (she even referred to herself as ‘defender of the unborn and traditional marriage’ in the house) while Shane/Courtney believes women should have a choice in what happens to their bodies and supports same sex marriage.

Ann and Courtney clashed on several occasions in the Big Brother house with Ann rolling her eyes as Courtney tried to speak about being gay. She has even told off Shane and Andrew Brady for engaging in what she mistakenly thought was a ‘sex act’ – the boys were actually just playfighting – and implied that Andrew’s family would be ashamed of watching him mucking about with Shane.

Ann has has stuck by her beliefs, which she has described as ‘unfashionable’, but calling them unfashionable is massively playing it down. During her career as a politician she has said the legalisation of same sex marriage in the UK made her feel ‘alienated’ and ‘very angry’. She has voted against equal gay rights, never voted on allowing two people of the same sex to get married, and voted against measures to prevent climate change. This goes beyond reality TV; she has made real world choices.

These views can rightly be called dated, yet Ann managed to make it all the way to the final of Celebrity Big Brother, finishing in second place. She received 39.5% of the public vote which is a fair old chunk. The nation has a long way to go when it comes to progressing as a society.

Maybe it was the very fact that Ann’s opinions and beliefs are so different that fetched the support. Ann thinks of herself as a ‘scourge of political correctness and general snowflakery and emotional incontinence’, but – like most people who say others are ‘easily offended’ – didn’t actually explain what this means. Emotionally incontinent about what? Was India being emotionally incontinent by getting upset when Ann referred to her as ‘he’ when nearly everyone else in the house managed not to do it? India’s journey as a transgender woman has not been an easy one, she has even lost contact with her son in the process, was it really so difficult for Ann to get it right?

Courtney said her win made a statement about ‘equality’ (Picture: James Shaw/REX/Shutterstock)

And don’t start about Ann’s age either, or her being of a different time. Ex-housemate Andrew Brady said it best: President Trump is 71 and he doesn’t get excused for the things he says and does, so why should she? There are plenty of elderly people who are more open-minded and accepting than Ann and her way of thinking is seen as archaic for a reason, which she is fully aware of. She is an intelligent woman who knows how she comes across and is not sorry about it at all.

Courtney has since said that winning the show as a man who occasionally dresses up in drag makes a strong statement about equality. Ann being within spitting distance of the win speaks volumes as well.

Courtney Act didn’t only win the Celebrity Big Brother final, but won it very convincingly – with almost half of the possible public vote.

According to official stats for the final released after the show on Friday night, Courtney – aka Shane Jenek – picked up almost half of the vote, scoring 49.43 per cent of all votes cast.

That put the RuPaul’s Drag Race star 10 per cent of runner-up Ann Widdecombe, who picked up 39.50 per cent of the vote to finish in second place.

And the remainder of the finalists were a long way behind the pair of them, with Shane Lynch finishing in third place on 7.42 per cent, and fourth-placed Jess Impiazzi on 2.75 per cent.

Meanwhile Wayne Sleep picked up just 0.9 per cent of the public vote to finish in fifth place.

Courtney Act however was slightly shocked by the win, saying: ‘Is this real life? Look at all these faces?’ as she emerged from the house.

After dubbing her win as ‘slightly ironic’ in The Year Of The Woman, she opened up about how much it meant to her.

Speaking to Emma Willis, Courtney said: ‘I guess coming into the house is validation that it’s okay to be different.’

Ann Widdecombe may have been the runner-up in this year’s Celebrity Big Brother, but she certainly didn’t go down without a fight.

After it was revealed Courtney Act had won Celebrity Big Brother, Ann sat down with host Emma Willis for her post-eviction interview which didn’t exactly go by without a few bumps.

Asked how she found living with fifteen other people when she usually lives alone, Ann said: ‘Absolutely terrible. There was noise all the time.

‘I was woken up in the morning by loud pop music played by Big Brother, there was even one day when that was followed by an obscene performance.’

Things got awkward however when Emma asked how she was going to cope going back to living alone with her cats, unaware they’re all dead.

Emma asked: ‘How do you think you’re going to fair now just being you with your lovely cats?’

‘Well I don’t have any cats that’s misinformation,’ Anne said.

‘I used to but they died.’

After some awkward giggles, Emma joked: ‘Now she feels awful because I just mentioned her dead cats.’

The awkward only accelerated when Emma went to ask a question she ‘already knew the answer to’ with Ann barking back: ‘So why bother asking it?’

After bringing up conversations in the house where she’s faced numerous disagreements with India Willoughby and Shane J, Emma asked if Ann if the disputes gave her ‘food for thought’.

Ann replied: ‘No. Look you don’t reason yourself to a position over a long number of years, and then suddenly in the course of a couple of conversation decide “Oh I’ve got that wrong”. You’ve reasoned yourself there. That is that position.

‘What I’m pleased about coming second is, is what an endorsement of free speech because whether people agreed with me or not is not the point. I exercised my freedom to say what is unfashionable.’

But will she maybe think differently in future? Emma received a snarky response.

‘No change,’ Ann said. ‘You could try a different line of questioning and you might get a different response. But if you stick with this you’re going to get no no no.’

A bit shocked, Emma replied: ‘Well maybe I’ll get some interviewing tips from you in future.’

Courtney Act however gushed about Andrew Brady while also denying the dress stunt was planned.

From the moment Courtney Act entered the Celebrity Big Brother house, she only had eyes for Andrew Brady.

Since then, the pair’s friendship blossomed into something beautiful, and viewers at home just couldn’t get enough of them.

The well deserved winner of this year’s series spoke to Emma Willis about her and Andrew’s relationship and revealed that she loved everything about him.

After winning the show, Courtney said: ‘The thing I love about Andrew is that he’s just so comfortable with everybody and everything and I said if more straight guys were like him the world would be a better place.

‘There’s something about somebody just being fine with it, and not caring what people in the house or at home are thinking, just knowing who he is and being confident in sharing that in an unconventional way.’

It was these qualities that the 36-year-old ‘loved’ and ‘respected’ about her housemate.

Emma asked Courtney if she pushed it a bit with Andrew when he had had a few to drink. But despite admittedly having a crush on the Apprentice star, she revealed that she ‘respected his boundaries’ and it was all just fun and games.

She said: ‘As much as it is fun to flirt, and it is fun to flirt, once the boys left I was like whats the point in doing drag?

‘But the thing I really do respect is that we did have that understanding, and I think that only the two of us knew what our relationship actually was cause people were like “Are they? Aren’t they? Are they?” But we really knew what it was.’

Although it felt at times that her relationship with the 26-year-old could have been more than what it was, Courtney reassured viewers that staying in the friend zone meant the world to her.

She said: ‘I completely just revel in the friendship more than anything because to me that’s more important.’

After she had finished gushing over Andrew, Emma asked the question we had all been waiting to hear.

Was the dropping of the dress planned when she entered the house?

Shocked at the question Courtney said: ‘Of course it wasn’t planned I’m not going to flash my gash to the whole nation!’

We still have our suspicions though!

How much are Celebrity Big Brother 2018 contestants being paid and what do they win?

Celebrity Big Brother might basically be free rent for a month – but the contestants also get paid some very tidy sums for taking part.

Yep, that’s right. They get paid to spend their days lounging around the sofas, enjoying dips in the hot tub and completing tasks involving them having to dress up as The Spice Girls.

The 21st series of the show culminates tonight as the final five – Jess Impiazzi, Ann Widdecombe, Shane J, Shane L and Wayne Sleep – battle it out to be crowned winner.

Every series sees a substantial difference between what the bigger names are stashing away verses the lesser-known stars who are filling the beds.

And this year, it’s no different.

[]

According to reports, former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe is by far the highest earner, taking home a sizable £100,000 for her stint in the house.

But despite being the big-bucks celebrity of this year’s series, she’s still managed to secure far less than past housemates, including Katie Price who took home £400,000, the late David Gest who took home £600,000 and twins Jedward who are believed to have pocketed a tidy £500,000.

It’s unclear how much Ann’s housemates – Jess Impiazzi, Malika Haqq, Amanda Barrie, John Barnes, Jonny Mitchell, Ashley James, Dapper Laughs, Wayne Sleep, Maggie Oliver, Courtney Act/Shane J, India Willoughby, Rachel Johnson, Shane Lynch, Ginuwine and Andrew Brady. – are earning, comparatively.

However, the wages fall to around £10,000 for the lesser-known stars, so it’s estimated that Jess, Ashley, Shane J, Andrew and Maggie could be at the lower end of the scale, while Rachel, India, Amanda, John, Wayne and Malika – who isn’t known as much as the others in the UK but her friendship with BFF Khloe Kardashian has earned her a following – are likely to be higher.

So despite 2018’s all-female series celebrating 100 years since women got the vote, the ladies aren’t vetoing their pay packets for the greater good of spreading the feminist message? Oh right.

Whether or not the CBB winner will be granted a cash prize to give to charity is unknown.

Until last year, it hadn’t been done since 2005. However, the winner – Sarah Harding – got to give £50k away to her chosen charity.

It’s a good job that show bosses have somehow managed to cut down on the pay packets, seeing as this series is thought to be one of the most lavish houses yet, with no expenses spared when it came to the decorating.

If the stylish bedrooms, sumptuous bathrooms and the outside sauna, a show insider told The Sun: ‘Producers pulled out all the stops to make sure this year’s house is the quirkiest and plushest viewers and housemates will have seen.

‘This series is a special one. They wanted the house to be a standout one.’

CBB’s Ann Widdecombe and India Willoughby clash in heated argument over gender reassignment surgery

Ann Widdecombe reprised her feud with India Willoughby in a heated exchange via video-link in the Celebrity Big Brother house.

The episode saw a number of heart-warming reunions between Andrew Brady and Courtney Act, along with a guest radio spot from Ginuwine, but not all the ex housemate returns went down swimmingly.

India Willoughby caused a particular ruckus with Ann Widdecombe, appearing via VT to read the CBB headlines while giving her verdicts on the finalists.

When it came to Ann’s turn under India’s firing line however, she didn’t hold back, saying: ‘Hi Ann, you describe yourself as brutally honest or so you claim, sadly not always to people’s faces.

‘You’re clever enough to pontificate on politics and religion, but not clever enough to get my gender correct on repeated occasions within the first week when it was all women.

‘Is that so hard to do? You said gender reassignment was a waste of money on the NHS, I believe this isn’t true because I know the facts. I respect people because they’re nice, not because they’re old.

‘You might win, but I hope not.’

Ann retorted: ‘You heard my views and at the time you ostensibly agreed with them.’

After Ann remarked ‘thank heavens’ to a comment from India about how most of the public don’t have gender dysphoria, India rallied back up again.

India said: ‘Thank heavens, did you just say?’

‘Well yes,’ Ann said. ‘Wouldn’t it be terrible if the whole population was suffering from something? Wouldn’t you think that was horrible?

‘India, if you can take offense you’ll always take offense and read something into what’s being said. Why don’t you go back to reading the news instead?’

Jess Impiazzi’s face pretty much summed up the exchange.
